Imagine your children growing up without any fillings! Many of us carry fears of dentistry produced by bad experiences of the past. A bad experience as children shapes our approach to dentistry and gives us our teeth. Many parents believe that their children have a probable, almost certain future of cavities and fillings. Create a future of no cavities for your children. Imagine dental visits for your children that are always fun!
The dental care of children must be shaped by the possibility that they can grow into adulthood without any fillings or dental work. This means total prevention.

Recent research into tooth decay has altered the way we view decay forever. It is possible to stop tooth decay without drilling, before it causes a collapse in the tooth (which happens relatively late on in the process). This “arrested” decay is often very dark and involves a “hardening” of the tooth. This has been understood for many years. But the really amazing finding (and this sounds too good to be true but it is true!) is this: Once decay has arrested and the tooth has hardened it will never start again. That’s true. Stop decay and it stops forever. This means that prevention can work before and after decay is present. Now it is unfortunately true that a new cavity can develop somewhere else. But our arrested decay is arrested for good. Baby teeth only have to hang around for a few years before being replaced by adult teeth. Because of this we can keep teeth with arrested decay for several years until the adult teeth come along. Your child has such good habits we can be confident decay is a thing of the past. Now their dental future looks great and as a parent you have delivered your child to adulthood with healthy teeth and no fear of the dentist. Quite an achievement!
Using PAD (photo-activated disinfection) we can kill the germs within the decay. This simple drill free technique creates a germ free space for the tooth to heal itself. With good cleaning and diet the tooth that was decayed will harden and the decay will “arrest”. The tooth might need a shield to protect it or this may be the only treatment it needs.
Children need to be nurtured and given time. Time to learn they can keep their teeth healthy and have this learning reinforced. Time to learn to take responsibility for the health of their own teeth. At Specialist Dental Partners we have a Dental Therapist. Fiona Remnant is bringing this new philosophy to children’s dental care. Children are seen on a regular for prevention at a fraction of the cost of the dentist. Fiona can carry out the type of simple treatment children sometimes need so your child need not see the dentist.
